LOCAL BAKERY FIND: Dutch Monkey Doughnuts

April 10, 2016

I am a sucker for a good local bakery shop and Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming, GA did not disappoint! We had some friends visiting us from DC and I had been wanting to try their doughnuts since I moved to the area so we brought them there one morning. I highly recommend trying them out if you live in the area or are just passing through! Be sure to like them on Facebook to see their daily specials.

Gold Filled vs Gold Plated Jewelry - What to buy and which one is better?

April 1, 2016

At Amoorella Jewelry we only carry high quality Sterling Silver, 14k Gold Filled and 14k Rose Gold Filled. I often get asked what "gold filled" means and if it is the same as "gold plated" jewelry.

WHAT IS GOLD FILLED?
Gold filled is an actual layer of real gold that has been bonded to another metal with high heat and pressure. It has 100% more real gold and is much stronger than "plated" jewelry. Gold filled jewelry is more valuable than gold plated jewelry but it is more affordable than solid gold jewelry so you basically get the look and feel of solid gold without the hefty price tag.

WILL GOLD FILLED JEWELRY TARNISH?
Because of the high heat and pressure bonding the gold will not rub off or turn colors like plated jewelry.

CLEANING AND CARING FOR GOLD FILLED JEWELRY:
Gold filled jewelry should be treated just like solid gold. It can get ruined and scratched when not taken care of properly. Keep gold filled jewelry away from liquids and chemicals. Like solid gold, gold filled jewelry can get dirty from everyday wear. You can clean it gently with mild soapy water but be sure to fully dry it and store it properly. To remove any scratches simple polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth.

BE CAREFUL WHEN SHOPPING FOR GOLD FILLED:
Gold Filled is regulated by the government and is legally required to constitute at least 5% or 1/20 gold by the total weight. If an item is simply described as just "gold filled" it may not be a quality piece. Gold filled jewelry is not required to have a stamp on the actual item but it must be properly listed in the item description.

The most common stamps found on gold filled jewelry are as follows:
14k Gold Filled
1/20 14k GF
1/10 10k GF
...and more
